Making a Difference
I watch the rain land
On the concrete, drops
Seem to make narry a difference
To the ground beneath.
A change in the small puddle of water,
To be sure, but that is only
A veneer, a surface that will
Dry up and fade away
Once the sun has returned.
Do I make a difference in you?
Or am I a raindrop
One of many that has been there before,
Trying to gain purchase
Attempting to make a difference
In a brief, uncertain world;
Only to make but a slight ripple
In your surface,
But whose attempts are then forgotten,
Once the sun has returned,
Once again.
On the concrete, drops
Seem to make narry a difference
To the ground beneath.
A change in the small puddle of water,
To be sure, but that is only
A veneer, a surface that will
Dry up and fade away
Once the sun has returned.
Do I make a difference in you?
Or am I a raindrop
One of many that has been there before,
Trying to gain purchase
Attempting to make a difference
In a brief, uncertain world;
Only to make but a slight ripple
In your surface,
But whose attempts are then forgotten,
Once the sun has returned,
Once again.
